My mother has a saying for everything. She got that from her mother. I'm not exactly sure how far back the tradition goes but the habit took a powerful hold on me at a very early age too, so I now can often be found reeling off a wise saying - or at least a wise crack - in any variety of circumstances, whether I've been invited to or not! (It's still open for debate as to whether I've inherited a blessing or a curse, here!) It never fails to amaze me how anyone within earshot of my mother always experiences a glazing over of the eyes while they ruminate on a curious phrase they've never heard before - only to find themselves snapping out of it in just in time to realize they've missed three more! She has become very well known for her frequent usage of the 'quaint old adages' her mother passed along to her - and you can trust me when I say, she throws plenty of her own around, too. All of those old expressions are golden and well worth passing on to the next generation. There's no denying that wisdom is truly ageless and my mother is living, breathing proof of that fact.

Our father was a bit more of an enigma to all of us. He was the strong, silent type, but you can be sure, everyone would sit up straight and listen really hard if he ever chose to speak. His words were few and simple, but always packed a wallop, so it was not uncommon to find yourself bleeding from your very soul for a while once he was through having a talk with you. I won't lie to you, the truth always stung but there was never any doubt in our minds that he loved us. His reassuring bear hugs always followed a brief reprimand and we knew his words were meant to guide and challenge us - not to confound or aggravate us. He never said very much - just enough to get us thinking about our infraction and inevitably, the solution for it. Which brings a good saying to mind - "We all have two ears and only one mouth for a reason!" Without actually saying it, the strongest message our father ever sent us was to "listen more and speak less." They say, "Silence is the fence around wisdom" and my father had wisdom in spades.

Our family knew the folly of "Instant Gratification" long before the term was ever coined. I'm sure you've heard the common household words, "Less is more". A quick, intelligent come-back can be extremely powerful - so it's great to commit a few to memory - because you never know when you'll be expected to respond with a poignant answer at a moment's notice. It is intensely satisfying to have the perfect words on the tip of your tongue that will fit any occasion or experience. A truism delivered with the proper intent, tone and timing can have a very profound and enduring effect on the human psyche. While a short quip might not make everything okay, it can definitely shed a lot of light on a situation and help get things moving in the right direction again. Try injecting a touch of humor at the appropriate time and people will not only be enlightened by what you've just said, they usually find it a little easier to smile about their own shortcomings, knowing they're not the first and / or the only person ever to have made that same blunder. My father would always say, "If you don't like it when people poke fun at you, try laughing at yourself. It'll take all the fun out of teasing you!" That was a tough lesson for us to learn, but one that truly works like a charm!

In my life, I have never found anything that sets my imagination in motion like "...a short sentence based on someone else's long experience". Proverbs, quotes and sayings - famous or otherwise - have always been a great way to catch a listener's attention (without the risk of losing it again by following up with a long, depressing speech). For intellectuals, what could be more thought-provoking than a short, brainy phrase to engage their active minds? Entire books have been written that don't possess the depth of meaning you can get out of one, simple, well-timed proverb or one-liner. For those of you seeking a deeper meaning out of life, the writings of so many who have gone before can provide the understanding you require and set you on the right path.

In closing, did you know that "Next to death, the one thing people fear the most is public speaking"? If that's the way you feel, that's okay! You are definitely not alone. I don't want to leave you with that awful statistic burning in your brain, so I'm sending out an open invitation to visit a few of these sites in your spare time - I will also encourage you to add them to your favorites - that way, you can always find the most meaningful words, the very instant you need them.

It has been a life-long dream of mine to publish a collection of works that would benefit mankind. A lofty dream, but a noble one, I think, and "The invariable mark of a dream is to see it come true". At one time or another, we have all uttered words we wish we could take back and done things that we regret having ever done. If you ever find yourself at a loss for words or worried that you might be coming across the wrong way, just remember about the enormous compilation of proverbs, sayings and one-liners to choose from on the net and they're sure to provide you with a fresh approach to any situation.
