This article will demonstrate a powerful concept called link enhancement (link leverage). Not a lot of people implement it. Those that do, have great results in terms of link building and traffic. Here is a quick example to help you understand it. If you put a link on your low traffic blog, you will get very little traffic and small amount of link juice. But what if you put the same link on a high traffic site visited by your target audience? This is what people call link enhancement, link leverage or market multipliers. It is the process of enhancing your links while using specific types of sites.

Now let's review specific steps you need to accomplish this. The process is composed of 3 parts, finding, building and spreading the word.

Finding: You're looking for Social bookmarking sites (such as Digg, Reddit), vertical forums, MySpace, Facebook and Yahoo groups. Find relevant forums using big-boards.com. Sign up to those forums and post a thread "What are your favorite Social Bookmarking sites". You will often get names of vertical social bookmarking sites that are related to your industry. If you know 2 of them, then put them in quotes and do a Google search. You will often find sites that have listed those 2 along with other related sites.

Go to Facebook, MySpace and Yahoo groups and search for relevant groups. If the group is dead, you can still try to revive it by posting interesting information (more about that below).

Prioritize the sites: Are they active? Are their links nofollow or dofollow (do not ignore nofollow places). Does the site have your category? If so, is it active? What is the Alexa ranking and how many pages are indexed by Google? How many backlinks do they have (check Yahoo site explorer)?

Building: What you need is content that is either funny or controversial. If you have it, that's great. But what if your page is strictly an affiliate marketing platform? In that case you will need to leverage other people's stories. For example create an account on a web-site like Tumblr, create a funny story/graphic, controversial review or use someone else's story (if it's allowed). Put a link in that Tumblr page to your affiliate site. Now you can create links to that Tumblr post on the above mentioned web properties.

This may seem like a lot of work for nothing. But trust me. Professionals do it. Newbies don't. Professionals make money and newbies won't. It's up to you to decide which side you're on. Once I've created a simple funny graphic related to Apple. It got picked up by Yahoo buzz and I had a flood of 3000 visitors on my site over night. You can too. It's not hard and it's a lot of fun to create.

Spreading the word: Create an avatar. When creating groups in Yahoo, MySpace or Facebook use memorable names, for example "Cat Lovers" is better than "Cat Group". Follow the top bookmarkers and "like" their bookmarks. To build initial trust post a couple of stories from the web which are not yours. Go to Digg and carefully study all the post titles. This is by far the best way to learn how to create titles that get clicked. Put a Tweet this and Facebook Like button on your page.
